Mammoth "M" Bike Rack Program

Project description: During the summer of 2010, the community of Mammoth Lakes will have a unique opportunity to play a role in designing a bicycle rack that is intended for use all throughout town. Through generous contributions from the Sierra Cycling Foundation and the Town of Mammoth Lakes' Measure R, a limited number of Mammoth "M" bike racks are available for installation by local businesses. These bike racks are based on a contemporary frame-supporting design and are intended to facilitate increased bicycle use in town. This pilot program is being offered to promote the use of modern bike racks, increase the exposure of Mammoth Lakes as a bicycle-friendly community, and get feedback on ways to improve the design and use of bike racks in the community. This prototype bike-rack design was inspired by the unique conditions and rugged nature of the region, as well as by the needs of our community as expressed in the Mammoth Lakes Trail System Master Plan update (2009). Due to the wide variety of bicycles used in Mammoth, a rack was needed to provide support, security, and functionality in a universally non-damaging configuration. Each rack is intended to accommodate two bicycles; multiple racks can be placed to provide for additional bikes. The "M" bike rack is also intended to provide an aesthetically pleasing symbol that expresses Mammoth Lakes and is easily recognizable to visitors, residents, and all bike users.
