Trail System Master Plan First Draft: Outreach

Project Description: In the late summer of 2008, the first draft of the Town of Mammoth Lakes Trail System Master Plan (TSMP) update was ready for presentation and public comment. Using funds from its SNC grant, MLTPA coordinated with the Town and other partners in the CAMP effort to ensure that the general public, along with local and regional officials and Town staff and commissions, were well aware of the draft plan and the parameters of the comment period, and that everybody would be in the best position possible to provide their comments. To this end, MLTPA produced 94 hard copies and 100 CDs of the draft plan hosted downloadable versions of the plan on our website, and coordinated effectively with Town staff to station complete hard-copy sets at five locations around town to ensure that anybody could access the plan and effectively get their comments to Steve Speidel, the Town's project manager for the TSMP update. We also were able to fund an onsite visit by Matt Benjamin of Alta Planning + Design, the consultant responsible for the draft plan, so that he could hear just what the community was saying. In the end, Mr. Speidel received about 945 comments on the draft plan from approximately 62 commentators, which kept the consultants busy until the Trail System Master Plan Final Draft was delivered to the Town in February 2009.

DELIVERABLES: Check out MLTPA's comments (more than 300 of them!) on the first draft of the Trail System Master Plan.

GRAPHICS: Thanks to the SNC grant, MLTPA was able to purchase a series of ads in the Mammoth Times and The Sheet to announce the availability of the draft plan and the beginning of the public comment period. See the ad here.

PHOTOS: TOML Principal Planner Steve Speidel led much of the outreach efforts, giving presentations before several meetings of the general public, the Mobility Commission, the Tourism and Recreation Commission, the Public Arts Commission, and others. MLTPA was there with the PB&J and cookies (natch!). Catch some photos of the great Steve Speidel in action!

PRESS: Read MLTPA's official press release announcing the outreach plan. MLTPA's outreach efforts caught the attention of the local press. Check out the cover story in The Sheet and the nice article in The Green Sheet.
